SUMMARY:Food as Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Tambra Raye Stevenson will kick off Food Literacy for All at the Michigan Union as part of the annual “Food as Resistance” speaker series during MLK week. This insightful talk delves into the dual role of food as both a weapon of oppression and a pathway to liberation. Through historical examples\, personal narratives\, and forward-thinking strategies\, Tambra explores how food sovereignty\, ancestral knowledge\, and community-driven solutions can dismantle inequities and foster health\, wealth\, and empowerment in Black communities. A reception will be catered by Michigan Dining\, featuring dishes with personal connections to the identities and culture of the chefs preparing them. Food service begins at 5:30PM. The talk and livestream will begin at 6:30PM. \nTambra Raye Stevenson is the visionary leader behind Women Advancing Nutrition\, Dietetics\, and Agriculture (WANDA). Her mission is to cultivate a generation of empowered Black women and girls who drive transformation in the food system\, fostering healthier communities through education\, advocacy\, and innovation. Featured in Forbes\, The Washington Post\, and Voice of America\, Tambra champions generational Black health as the new wealth\, rooted in her deep understanding of the nutritional heritage of the African diaspora.

SUMMARY:building Environments\, building Theory: Tulay Atak
DESCRIPTION:How do environmental issues impact\, affect\, and shift theoretical work on architecture\, landscape and design? \nIf theory is what establishes the relationship between what is present and what can be imagined\, allowing us to look forward and backward\, then it is the task of architectural theory to consider what remains constant and what changes in the discipline as it addresses current challenges. The environmental lens on theory provides ways to encompass all elements of building activities\, allowing for connections to be made across a wide range of scales\, from that of a building detail to those of entire landscapes and cities. It also urges us to consider the representation of the environment in architecture\, bringing into view the limits and entanglements of the discipline\, drawing new affinities\, producing knowledge and advancing the discipline. \nJohe Architecture Lecture Series: Imaginaries\nSupported by the Herbert W. and Susan Johe Lecture and Exhibition Fund
