SUMMARY:Radical Planning - Guest Lecturer Morgan Fett
DESCRIPTION:Morgan will be presenting her research on the case of Yasuní National Park in Ecuador and the decade-long movement to end oil drilling in a contested area of the park. She’ll highlight how holistic well-being and the rights of nature were leveraged by Indigenous and grassroots movements to end oil drilling in the park. Holistic well-being and the rights of nature can both be considered Indigenous technologies\, and many of the policy and planning cases where they are used have frameworks based off of Indigenous cosmovisions. This research analyzes how such technologies are partially adopted and even co-opted by various actors and the implications that can have on land use and environmental justice in planning decisions.

SUMMARY:Beige\, Grey\, Green\, and Rude: Anna Neimark & Andrew Atwood
DESCRIPTION:The recent work of First Office includes several houses just completed and under construction. They all share a dull color palette of beige\, grey\, and green\, as well as a common lineage of rude forms. These low contrast houses originate from earlier works\, including Mountain House\, Dolmen Works\, and Duchamp’s Shotgun\, each providing common details for the pitches of roof\, the distribution of cores\, and the rhythm of doors. In this talk\, we will share the construction progress on our recent houses as well as revisit the projects that have defined the basic vocabulary for our practice at large. \nJohe Architecture Lecture Series: Imaginaries\nSupported by the Herbert W. and Susan Johe Lecture and Exhibition Fund

SUMMARY:No Strings Attached: A Public Encounter
DESCRIPTION:TVLab invites you to engage with the outcomes of No Strings Attached\, a transdisciplinary workshop that reimagines puppetry as a site of inquiry into embodiment\, materiality\, and the politics of assembly. Led by Anima Theatre director Yiorgos Karakantzas\, with support from puppet fabricator Alma Roccella\, the workshop brought together students from Taubman College\, Stamps\, SMTD\, and the School of Social Work to co-design and construct inhabitable animated artifacts. \nExploring hybridization as both a conceptual and material strategy\, participants developed full-body puppets that disrupt conventional notions of representation and agency\, foregrounding the dynamic intersections of human forms\, objects\, and performative motion. This event offers a space to encounter these animated forms in action and reflect on the evolving dialogue between bodies\, materials\, and the act of assembly.

SUMMARY:Other Ways of Building: Christian Hart Nakarado
DESCRIPTION:In contrast to modern and colonial architectures\, Anishinaabe building practices and the worldviews they embody represent a fundamentally different approach to design. The Traditional Ecological Knowledge systems indigenous to the Great Lakes challenge the common understanding of objects and buildings as fixed or stable\, instead conceptualizing them as always in flux\, and therefore impermanent. This lecture traces these ideas through recent work at the Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School in Michigan and projects designed and built in northern hardwood forests over the past five years. \nJohe Architecture Lecture Series: Imaginaries\nSupported by the Herbert W. and Susan Johe Lecture and Exhibition Fund

SUMMARY:Black History Month - Fireside Chat #2
DESCRIPTION:The Black History Month Committee invites you to a Fireside chat exploring the intersections of art\, design\, and equity. Join esteemed Black creatives as they share their journeys\, discuss the transformative power of their work\, and reflect on the role of storytelling in shaping more inclusive spaces. This intimate conversation promises to inspire\, challenge\, and spark meaningful dialogue about fostering change through creativity. \nTheme: Black Centered Education \nThe theme of the second fireside chat\, Black-Centered Education\, emphasizes and centers the histories\, cultures\, contributions\, and experiences of Black people. Black-Centered Education promotes a curriculum that reflects diverse Black perspectives\, acknowledges the intersectionality of race\, gender\, and class\, all while incorporating different points of views from intellectual traditions of African\, African American\, Caribbean\, and Afro-Latinx peoples. \nWe also recognize the crucial need in today’s culture for more uncomfortable but necessary conversations that shed a light on what educating black people looks and feels like. Challenging dominant\, Eurocentric narratives and reimagining education as a tool for empowerment\, resistance\, and transformation through art\, community engagement and collaboration\, we will challenge the status-quo as future thinkers and doers to dismantle systemic inequalities. \nThis session encourages listeners –both Black and non-Black – to explore the complexities of race\, identity\, power\, and justice in ways that are grounded in the lived experiences and intellectual contributions of Black people. \nSpeakers:\nLutalo Sanifu\, Director of Community Engagement\, University of Michigan Center for Innovation\nJerjuan Howard\, Owner of the Howard Family Bookstore\, and Founder/Executive Director of Umoja Debate League/Umoja Village\nMarcus Jones\, Self-Performing Operations (SPO) Manager at Turner Construction\nQuinn Alexandria Hunter\, Assistant Professor\, Penny W. SUMMARY:Kelbaugh Lecture: Ellen Dunham-Jones
DESCRIPTION:Dead malls\, dying office parks\, aging commercial strip corridors and other parking lot-dominated properties provide communities with the opportunity sites to address new challenges from climate change to social equity that suburbia was never designed for. Drawing on her two co-authored award-winning books and unique database of over 2\,500 suburban retrofits\, Ellen Dunham-Jones will share successful case studies that have redeveloped\, re-used\, and/or regreened these sites into more just\, healthy\, and prosperous places. \nEllen Dunham-Jones is a professor of architecture and directs the MS in Urban Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  An authority on sustainable suburban redevelopment\, she maintains a unique database of over 2\,500 suburban retrofits\, hosts the REDESIGNING CITIES podcast series\, was Architectural Record’s 2018-19 Woman Educator of the year\, was recognized in 2023 and 2017 by Planetizen as one of the 100 most influential urbanists\, was the 2023 Plym Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Illinois asking “what would a non-sexist suburb be like?”\, and will be awarded The Seaside Prize in February 2025 along with her co-author June Williamson. \nShe is co-author with June of two award-winning books: Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburbs\, (Wiley\, 2009\, 2011\, Mandarin 2013) received a PROSE award as best architecture and planning book of 2009. The sequel\, Case Studies in Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Strategies for Urgent Challenges (Wiley\, 2021) received the Book of the year award from the Environmental Design Research Association. This book series documents how successful retrofits of aging shopping centers\, strip mall corridors\, office parks\, and other parking-lot dominated properties are helping their communities disrupt automobile dependence\, improve public health\, support an aging population\, leverage social capital for equity\, compete for jobs\, and add water and energy resilience. The work has been featured in The New York Times\, Harvard Business Review\, PBS\, NPR\, TED and other prominent venues. \nShe is a Fellow of the Congress for the New Urbanism as well as the Brook Byers Institute of Sustainable Systems\, serves on the Urban Deisgn Academic Council steering committee\, lectures widely\, and conducts workshops and research on the many co-benefits of retrofitting – as well as on the potential urban design impacts of autonomous vehicles. She has BS and M.Arch degrees from Princeton University\, practiced architecture for 20 years\, and taught at UVA and MIT before being recruited to direct the Architecture Program at Georgia Tech in 2000. \nThe Douglas S. Kelbaugh Lecture is generously funded through an endowed fund given by Douglas Kelbaugh and Kathleen Nolan to support an annual public lecture on the topic of urban design. The contributions of Douglas Kelbaugh\, FAIA\, FCNU\, professor emeritus of architecture and urban and regional planning and dean emeritus of Taubman College\, to the field of sustainable architecture and urban planning\, the Taubman College community\, cities\, and the education of students will continue to create a positive impact in the world for years to come\, including through the annual Kelbaugh Lecture.

SUMMARY:Scales of Practice: Rebuilding the American Town\, City and Region: David Gamble
DESCRIPTION:Scales of Practice presents paradigms for redevelopment and a range of perspectives on rebuilding across the American landscape at three scales: the town\, city and region. Rebuilding the American City highlights urban design and planning projects that have been catalysts for their downtowns and were implemented despite social\, economic and environmental challenges. In the scholarship of urbanism\, towns are overlooked and understudied. Rebuilding the American Town highlights what smaller municipalities are doing to capitalize on their intrinsic assets and remain vibrant. Rebuilding the American Region probes strategies to address climate change\, energy production and our culture’s reliance on the automobile. \nJohe Architecture Lecture Series: Imaginaries\nSupported by the Herbert W. and Susan Johe Lecture and Exhibition Fund
