SUMMARY:Panel Discussion about AI: FA(AI)Q
DESCRIPTION:The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning invites you to a discussion on artificial intelligence and its impact on spatial practices and pedagogy. This event brings together guests from both within and beyond the university\, representing a diverse range of disciplines and perspectives on AI. Speakers will engage with questions gathered from students\, faculty\, and staff\, fostering a dialogue shaped by the concerns and curiosities of our academic community. \nThe discussion will explore key themes\, including the future of AI in higher education and learning\, issues of transparency\, bias\, and ethical use\, its evolving role in design and creative professions\, and the broader political economy of AI and institutional response. We look forward to a critical conversation as we grapple with the real-time complexities of AI and what it means for the world we’re shaping. \n(Note: The symposium’s parenthetical title is a playful mashup of AI and the Internet Age’s focus on posting concise lists of questions in FAQs.) \nSchedule \n\n1:00 PM – Opening Remarks\n1:10 PM – 2:30 PM – Panel 1\n\nModerators: Joy Knoblauch and Scott Campbell\nMatias del Campo\nRenee Sieber\nRob Bernard\nDr. Mercedes Bunz\n\n\n2:30 PM – 4:00 PM – Panel 2\n\nModerators: Xiaofan Liang and McLain Clutter\nKeonda W. Buford\nRon Eglash\nCatherine Griffiths\nAshley Louie\n\n\n4:00 PM – 5:00 PM – Reflection\n\nIf you can’t attend in person\, join us virtually on YouTube. \n \nThis event is supported by the Guido A. Binda Exhibit and Lecture fund. For seven decades\, Guido Binda\, B.Arch.’31\, practiced architecture in Western Michigan\, specializing in school design. Guido\, with his wife Elizabeth\, created this fund to provide for an exhibit program and annual lecture by visiting professionals.

SUMMARY:Housing by Any Other Name: Anda & Jenny French
DESCRIPTION:French 2D uses thermal and social comfort\, and the feelings provoked by form and character\, to drive technical and formal invention. This lecture will present a series of housing projects\, interspersed with a series of short-term installations\, interweaving the invention of unusual pre-occupancy housing workshops housing with the production of post-occupancy reports for events like collective meals. The lecture will highlight a design process that considers layers\, both hard and soft\, that connect bodies and emotions in space along with the participatory models that French 2D creates\, which are not about collating clients’ desires\, but translating meaning through our mutual expertise. \nJohe Architecture Lecture Series: Imaginaries\nSupported by the Herbert W. and Susan Johe Lecture and Exhibition Fund

SUMMARY:Winter 2025 UMAPS Research Colloquium Series: Planning\, Power and Sugar - Ghana's Troubled Sugar Factory and Rural Transformations
DESCRIPTION:A highlight of the U-M African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) program\, the Research Colloquium Series offers the scholars an opportunity to formally present their work. Taubman Africa Alliance and UMAPS scholar Michael Gameli Dziwornu will share his interdisciplinary investigation into the multifaceted transformations—social\, spatial\, and environmental—that are currently transpiring in the environs of the Asutsuare sugar factory in Ghana. By offering critical insights into the complex dynamics surrounding this emblematic industrial site\, his research aspires to contribute substantively to the formulation of more equitable and sustainable development policies that can be applicable to rural regions across the African continent. The event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Comparative Gesture: Jennifer Robinson and Christian Schmid
DESCRIPTION:A discussion with Jennifer Robinson and Christian Schmid about their recent books on urban comparative research\, with particular focus on African cities.\nJennifer Robinson is Professor of Human Geography\, University College London\, UK. She is the author of Ordinary Cities: Between Modernity and Development (2006)\, a seminal work which developed a postcolonial critique of urban studies\, and Comparative Urbanism: Tactics for Global Urban Studies (2023). The latter book proposes grounds for reformatting comparative urban practice and offers a wide range of tactics for researching global urban experiences. Her empirical research in South Africa examined the history of apartheid cities and the politics of post-apartheid city-visioning\, while her comparative research has considered urban development politics in London\, Shanghai and Johannesburg\, and transnational circuits shaping African urbanization. \nChristian Schmid is an urban researcher\, geographer and sociologist\, Professor of Sociology\, Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich. He is a is a member of the International Network for Urban Research and Action (INURA). His research focuses on planetary urbanization\, comparative urban analysis and theories of urbanization and of space. His recent books include Vocabularies for an Urbanising Planet: Theory Building through Comparison (ed. with Monika Streule)\, which rethinks cartography as an instrument for the analysis of urbanization processes (2023)\, and Henri Lefebvre and the Theory of the Production of Space (2022)\, a reconstruction of Lefebvre’s theory of space and of the urban.

SUMMARY:"I Was Asked to Stand": Pascale Sablan
DESCRIPTION:“I Was Asked to Stand” educates and empowers the participants to understand the cause and possible solutions to the disparity in the lack of representation\, documentation\, and acknowledgment of the great works of women and minority architects. How do we\, as designers\, help create a culture of awareness and inclusion? \nOur engaging program will bring light to inclusion and diversity\, helping you to understand and appreciate the great works built by women and diverse designers. You’ll discover how they took on an array of challenges\, fashioned them into opportunities\, and finally\, triumphed. You’ll also come to see the history of challenges faced\, such as the general public’s lack of knowledge; how to proactively change the profession; and lastly\, how to meet future challenges. \nYou’ll leave with these valuable\, long-lasting takeaways: (1) a list of collaborative organizations and groups that can help you make a difference; (2) a new-found ability to identify and name women and minority architects and their contributions to the built environment; and (3) a better sense of how architects reach out to the community\, as they get diverse children both interested in and on the pipeline to the field. \nAt the end of the seminar\, participants will understand the educational systematic forces of erasure that serve to keep the diversity numbers of professionals low. With this new understanding\, the participants learn the tools to make their professional practice equitable\, just\, diverse\, and inclusive. \nhttps://pascalesablan.com\nhttps://www.beyondthebuilt.com \nJohe Architecture Lecture Series: Imaginaries\nSupported by the Herbert W. and Susan Johe Lecture and Exhibition Fund
