SUMMARY:Studio Reassembled Lecture Series: Activism... An Origin Story
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the Winter 2025 term\, Studio Reassembled is hosting a lecture series centered on the themes of commoning\, collectivity\, and the future of work. Featuring guests from Taubman College\, the series provides students with a chance to engage their faculty and gain deeper insights into their design practices and research. \nThe turn of the millennium\, the financial crisis of 2008\, the racial reckoning of the summer of 2020…. Each of these crisis moments–situated within the short lifetimes of today’s architecture students–brought about calls for and efforts toward a revaluing of architecture. In this lecture\, Sharon Haar discusses how we might situate recent events within the longer arc of activist movements to learn from past efforts as we build toward new futures.

SUMMARY:The Condition of Difficulty: Carlos Bedoya
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the possibility of finding a unique form of architecture through difficulty and detour. By moving away from traditional methods\, we aim to establish a more meaningful relationship within our profession\, which could lead to the discovery of a new set of architectural axioms. \nCarlos Bedoya is a partner at PRODUCTORA\, a Mexico City-based studio founded in 2006. His work emphasizes precise geometries and timeless building design with minimal gestures. PRODUCTORA has received numerous awards\, including those from The Architectural League of New York and IIT Chicago’s MCHAP. In 2011\, they co-founded LIGA\, Espacio para Arquitectura\, to promote emerging architecture in Latin America. \nJohe Architecture Lecture Series: Imaginaries\nSupported by the Herbert W. and Susan Johe Lecture and Exhibition Fund

SUMMARY:Hussain Indorewala | Radical Planning Speaker Series 2025
DESCRIPTION:Since the late-1980s\, Mumbai’s policy makers have adopted a purportedly ‘win-win’ model of low-income housing by involving private developers. The built form of the city has been shaped by the exclusive focus on financial viability and maximization of floor-space\, by abandoning all the prerequisites for a healthful and enriching living environment. This focus of ‘coercive formalization’ is premised on the displacement of squatters from unregulated housing and pushing them into deregulated housing\, often in the city’s peripheries. In this presentation we will discuss an alternative: a ‘Local Area Plan’ prepared by activists and community based organisations in 2017 for Malvani – a 282 hectare area in the north-western suburbs of Mumbai with many low-income housing settlements. The settlement upgradation plan was inspired by the Geddesian ‘conservative surgery’ approach\, to facilitate infrastructure and service inputs without displacement\, and by improving what people have built themselves.

SUMMARY:Ghellie Blik Stories with Clint Abrahams
DESCRIPTION:The Taubman Africa Alliance invites you to a critical dinner event rethinking the boundaries between lecture and lived experience. \nIn Afrikaans a “ghellie blik” is a found metal object perforated to hold fire\, serving as a communal gathering point for storytelling. It symbolizes community in places otherwise defined by infrastructural neglect. \n“Ghellie Blik Stories” with Clint Abrahams are dialogues around this fire\, exploring the meaning and practice of architecture in marginalized communities. They interrogate whether architecture is an act of being or becoming. They question how one describes\, from within\, places routinely represented by indifference or distortion\, and how alternate languages or practices might articulate such spaces more accurately. \nDue to limited capacity\, an RSVP is required\, and attendance will be limited to the first 12 respondents.

SUMMARY:Reading and Conversation: “Under the Campus\, the Land”
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation on Anishinaabe Futuring\, Colonial Non-Memory and the Origin of the University of Michigan. \nIn the 1817 Treaty of Fort Meigs\, Anishinaabe leaders granted land to a college where their children could be educated. At the time\, the colonial settlement of Anishinaabe homeland hardly extended beyond Detroit in what settlers called the “Michigan Territory.” Four days after the Treaty of Fort Meigs was signed\, the First College of Michigania was founded to claim the Anishinaabe land grant. Four years later\, the newly-chartered University of Michigan would claim this land. By the time the University of Michigan moved to Ann Arbor in 1837\, Anishinaabe people had been forced to cede almost all their land in what had become the state of Michigan\, now inhabited by almost 200\,000 settlers. \nAndrew Herscher’s recent book\, Under the Campus\, the Land (University of Michigan Press\, March\, 2025)\, narrates the University of Michigan’s place in both Anishinaabe and colonial history\, tracing the University’s participation in the colonization of Anishinaabe homeland\, Anishinaabe efforts to claim their right to an education\, and the university’s history of disavowing its responsibilities to Anishinaabe people. \nAndrew Herscher and Bethany Hughes will discuss the book and the questions it raises about the University of Michigan’s history and future. \nFree and open to the public\, no registration required.

DESCRIPTION:Keeping the Your City Alive: Planning as Resistance and Imagination — This session draws inspiration from The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin to ask: what does it mean to defend the soul of a city? Through the lens of speculative fiction\, we’ll explore how cultural erasure\, displacement\, and so-called “neutral” planning policies mirror the novel’s antagonist—an abstract\, consuming force that seeks to flatten difference and displace identity. Participants will consider what it means to plan with\, not for\, those who are deeply embedded in the spirit of their neighborhoods\, and leave with new frameworks for engaging cultural memory\, power\, and narrative in their practice. In a field that so often seeks to plan around community\, we’ll instead ask: how can engaging community become an act of both resistance and radical imagination?
