SUMMARY:Artistic Approaches to Making an Environmentally Just World
DESCRIPTION:What is required to approach the creation of performance\, visual art\, architecture\, and design in a sustainable way? As climate change continues\, how do artists\, architects\, and designers need to reconsider how they do their work? How might students incorporate environmental justice into their emerging artistry? \nIn this interactive conversation\, facilitated by UM Faculty Director of Arts Research/Creative Practice Clare Croft\, artists\, architects\, and arts administrators–from across UM and Southeast Michigan–will share approaches to these necessary and contemporary questions. Together\, we’ll look at examples of how all of us in the arts are shifting how we work and/or amplifying particular aspects of our practice in response to climate change and other environmental realities. As part of the gathering\, upcoming UM funding opportunities at the intersection of arts and environment will be discussed. \nPanelists \n\nSarah Oliver\, Associate Professor\, Theatre & Drama\nJen Maigret\, Professor of Architecture & Director\, Climate Futures\nAlexis Lamb\, Founder\, CEO & Artistic Director\, Refugia Festival\nÉmilie Monnet and Waira Nina\, artists\, Nigamon / Tunai\nShawn Rieschl Johnson\, Chief Programming and Production Officer\, Detroit Opera\nJoseph Trumpey\, Professor\, Stamps\n\nThis event is part of the University of Michigan’s Climate Week.

SUMMARY:Institutions Lecture: MVRDV Aser Gimenez Ortega
DESCRIPTION:For each of the past ten years\, the programs shared by the institutions studio have explored the multiple ways Institution buildings refer to attempts to improve the functioning of organizations by creating\, strengthening or changing ‘institutional software’ – the way people relate to one another in the context of public action and public activities. This semester\, the studio focuses on the framework of the typology of a Market while addressing the resilience of the marketplace as a public institution. A framework which invites students to challenge on how the market’s representational role can mediate new spatial forms in a digital era of avidly online consumption. \nIn order to reflect on public markets and food production\, the institutions studio is hosting our guest speaker\, Aser Giménez-Ortega\, Spanish architect and associate director at MVRDV. Giménez-Ortega studied at TU Eindhoven\, the Netherlands and Universidad Politécnica de Valencia\, Spain\, graduating with a Masters in Architecture in 2005. Before joining MVRDV\, he worked as an architect and urban designer in Spain\, Brazil\, and the Netherlands. Aser joined MVRDV in 2007\, and has experience leading projects of various scales and phases\, ranging from masterplan to interior design and from concept to construction. Aser overlooked the conceptualization and realization of Oslo’s DNB bank headquarters and Shanghai’s Hongqiao CBD\, both exemplary green projects with a fast\, smooth construction process.

SUMMARY:Water in Mexico City and Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Counter mapping maps developed by the community members in Mexico City workshops will be exhibited in an open layout in the event space. Attendees of the event will participate in an informal and large-scale counter mapping workshop through a “blank” wall with information about Michigan’s history with water; here visitors can use the materials provided to draw an interpretation of their relationship with water and the spaces they occupy\, turning the wall into a creatively expressed collage conveying spatial information not normally found in maps. To raise awareness of the current water crisis in Mexico City and what’s being done about it as well as Michigan’s own concerns facing its bodies of water\, a keynote panel will share their expertise on water relationships in urban areas. Loreta Castro and José Pablo\, from Taller Capital\, will speak from the perspective of Mexico City\, and two Michigan speakers – one U-M faculty\, and one Michigan water conservationist – will join them to talk on behalf of Michigan’s great lakes. The exhibition will be kicked off with this keynote panel and hopefully exist in the space for the time permitted by the venue\, with the intention of having the exhibit presented for approximately one month.

SUMMARY:Your Pathway to Grad School: Aiding Your Application to Taubman College (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:We recognize that entry into graduate study in either planning or architecture is rarely intuitive\, particularly for those without family\, mentors\, or peers in the profession. Throughout the hour\, our goal is to help demystify the process in 3 segments: \n\nApplicant materials\, Tips/Pitfalls in application preparation\, how to address costs.\nBreakout sessions with current students to talk about how they assessed a quality program\, their process on completing their applications\, and how they found their right fit.\nBreakout sessions with faculty to discuss working in their prospective professions\, and discuss their program(s).\n\nThis session is especially focused on first-generation college students and/or students seeking additional guidance on the graduate application process. \nPlease contact Taubman College Admissions at TaubmanCollegeAdmissions@umich.edu with further questions. \nTimes listed are ET.
