SUMMARY:Vladimir Kara-Murza - 2025 Wallenberg Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Vladimir Kara-Murza\, Russian politician\, author\, historian\, and former political prisoner\, will receive the 2025 Wallenberg Medal from the University of Michigan on November 4th at 4:30PM in Rackham Auditorium. A close colleague of the slain opposition leader Boris Nemtsov\, he served as deputy leader of the People’s Freedom Party and was a candidate for the Russian Parliament. Leading diplomatic efforts on behalf of the opposition\, Kara-Murza played a key role in the adoption of Magnitsky sanctions against top Russian officials by the United States\, United Kingdom\, European Union\, Canada\, and Australia. Magnitsky sanctions are governmental sanctions against foreign individuals who have committed human rights abuses or been involved in significant corruption. For this work he was twice poisoned and left in a coma; a joint media investigation by Bellingcat\, The Insider\, and Der Spiegel has determined that officers of the Russian Federal Security Services (FSB) were behind the attacks. \nIn April 2022\, Kara-Murza was arrested in Moscow for publicly denouncing the invasion of Ukraine and war crimes committed by Russian forces. Following a closed-door trial at the Moscow City Court\, he was sentenced to 25 years for “high treason” and kept in solitary confinement at a maximum-security prison in Siberia. He was released in August 2024 as part of the largest East-West prisoner exchange since the Cold War negotiated by the U.S. and German governments. \nKara-Murza is a contributing writer at the Washington Post\, winning the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for his columns written from prison\, and has previously worked for Echo of Moscow\, BBC\, RTVi\, Kommersant\, World Affairs\, and other media organizations. He has directed three documentary films and is the author or contributor to several books on Russian history and politics. \nKara-Murza serves as vice-president at the Free Russia Foundation\, as senior advisor at Human Rights First\, and as senior fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights in Montreal. He was the founding chairman of the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom and has led successful international efforts to commemorate Nemtsov\, including with street designations in Washington\, D.C. and London. Kara-Murza is a recipient of several awards\, including the Council of Europe’s Václav Havel Human Rights Prize\, and is an honorary fellow at Trinity Hall\, Cambridge. He holds an M.A. (Cantab.) in History from Cambridge. He is married\, with three children. \n“Like Raoul Wallenberg\, Vladimir Kara-Murza has dedicated his life to defending democracy and human rights\, exhibiting extraordinary courage and vision\,” said Sioban Harlow\, chair of the Wallenberg Medal Executive Committee and Professor Emerita of Epidemiology\, Obstetrics and Gynecology\, and Global Public Health. \nThe Wallenberg Medal and Lecture ceremony is free and open to the public. For event inquiries and requests for event accommodations\, please contact wallenberglecture@umich.edu or 734-936-3973.

SUMMARY:LunchUP+T with Michaela Zint
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is not only an environmental crisis but also a profound emotional one. Rising levels of climate anxiety—defined as worry\, fear\, or distress about the impacts of climate change —are increasingly shaping how students\, professionals\, and communities engage with sustainability challenges. Recent studies\, including at the University of Michigan\, show that while too little or too much climate anxiety can hinder effective engagement\, moderate levels may motivate constructive action. \nThis presentation will provide an introduction to the topic\, including the relationship between climate emotions and climate action\, and highlight how “emotion-informed” approaches to teaching can foster resilience\, agency\, and hope. Dr. Zint will share evidence on the prevalence and impacts of climate anxiety\, the role of emotions in shaping climate action\, and promising strategies for supporting individuals in transforming anxiety into meaningful individual and collective action. Participants will gain insights into practical interventions—ranging from facilitated emotional sharing to nature-based experiences and creative expression—that can help turn climate distress into pathways toward a sustainable and just future.

SUMMARY:Raymón “Ray” Richardson - M.Arch Alumni Virtual Fireside Chat
DESCRIPTION:Raymón “Ray” Richardson is a Design Professional at The Collaborative + Acock (Ann Arbor office) where he contributes to design development\, visualization\, and documentation. Ray is a recent Master of Architecture graduate from Taubman College and recipient of the Willeke Prize. \nWhile at Taubman College\, his thesis positioned Detroit’s I-375 corridor as evidence of the infrastructural violence embedded in American mobility\, arguing for degrowth-oriented speculative futures that slow the city down\, repair historic erasures\, and reimagine the sunken highway as a site of collective architectural authorship. \nRay’s prior experience includes preservation-focused design work at Thomas Porter Architects (Toledo office) and teaching roles at Taubman College and the ArcPrep program in Detroit\, supporting emerging young designers. Beyond architectural practice\, he pursues photography and coaches youth soccer — continually exploring how spatial thinking and seeing can strengthen community\, connection\, and everyday urban life.

SUMMARY:Pop-up Exhibit: the Michigan Kit-House Industry
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why so many older houses look alike? Playing an outsized role\, Michigan\, with its ready supply of lumber\, skilled laborers\, and easy access to water and rail transport\, was the center of the kit-house industry in the early to mid-20th century. Stop by to see a pop-up exhibit highlighting changing trends in suburban American housing through a selection of kit-house catalogs. The catalogs\, from Michigan-based companies like Aladdin (of Bay City) and Hom-o-Graf (of Detroit). represent just a portion of the house catalog collection in the AAEL Special Collections.
