Associate Professor of Architecture Joy Knoblauch will give a keynote lecture on February 20 at the Berlage on the Miner Memorial Hospitals in Appalachia, 1953-1958.
A system of 10 hospitals was built as a result of a labor dispute with the United Mine Workers of America by architects E. Todd Wheeler of Perkins and Will and several others. The hospitals were applauded by prominent urbanologist and activist Jane Jacobs, yet controversial in the eyes of many, at a time when communal action faced mistrust.
The lecture explains the place of buildings in the Medical Complex, aligned with the thesis exhibition at Delft University. The Berlage Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture and Urban Design is part of Delft University Technology’s Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment in the Netherlands.
