Taubman College Taubman faculty receive and participate in 2011-2012 ACSA awards
Associate Professor Geoffrey Thun, Assistant Professors Steven Y. Mankouche, Wei-Han Vivian Lee, Kathy Velikov and McClain Clutter, Lecturers Tsz Yan Ng, Matthew Schulte and Josh Bard were named 2011-2012 Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) award winners. Architecture Chair and Associate Professor John McMorrough served on the ACSA/AIAS New Faculty Teaching Award Jury. Each year, ACSA honors architectural educators for exemplary work in areas such as building design, community collaborations, scholarship, and service. The ACSA will hold an Awards Ceremony for the winners at the ACSA 100th Annual Meeting in Boston, March 1-4, 2012.
Thun and Velikov won the 2011-2012 Faculty Design Award for The Stratus Project, a design research-based installation that successfully develops a conceptual framework capable of negotiating between prototypical studies and real-world applications. Lee won a Faculty Design Honorable Mention for her project “Hair, Spikes, Cattail, and Turkeyfoot,” the research, design, and construction of a thatch pavilion on the grounds of the Matthaei Botanical Garden, which originated through the college’s Research Through Making Program. Mankouche, Ng, Schulte and Bard also won a Faculty Design Honorable Mention for their project Digital Steam Bending, a parametrically adaptable wishbone structural system, also originated out of Research Through Making. Clutter, along with Clare L. Lyster and Judith De Jong from University of Illinois at Chicago, won the 2011-2012 ACSA/AIA Housing Design Education Award for Housing Urbanism: 5 Proposals for Chicago, which focused on high levels of residential density in various parts of the urban core.
