Manning Thomas Participates in NPR Initiative Exploring Detroit’s Artistic Forces

Centennial Professor June Manning Thomas, along with NPR’s Michel Martin and WDET’s Travis Wright, will lead a discussion exploring how artistic forces are helping to drive the Motor City forward. They will be joined by a panel of the city’s innovative chefs, performers, artists and craftsmen at The Carr Center on May 21, 2015, for a conversation that explores the many challenges and triumphs encountered while striving to redefine life in Detroit. Manning Thomas was invited based on her long history of scholarly research and authorship on Detroit; she recently co-published “Mapping Detroit: Land, Community and Shaping a City” and has written many other acclaimed books on the city including “Redevelopment and Race: Planning a Finer City in Postwar Detroit.”

NPR’s Michel Martin hosted the one-hour daily show Tell Me More from 2006-2014 and now can be heard across NPR news programs, bringing her reporting and interviewing experience to bear on NPR’s coverage of relevant topics, including education, families, faith, race and social issues. Outside the studio, she is hosting NPR Presents Michel Martin, a live event series in collaboration with member stations across the country. WDET’s Travis Wright is host and executive producer of Culture City.

The event is open to the public. For more information, please visit NPR’s website: Motor City Drive
