Arquero de Alarcón promoted to associate professor with tenure in architecture and urban planning

Trained in regional science and urbanism, Maria Arquero de Alarcón has brought advanced European techniques of analysis and representation to ambitious design projects that involve integrating complex natural systems at different scales. Her unique combination of ecology, regional design, and social concern is exemplified by the prize-winning “Liquid Planning Detroit” (2012), where her broad understanding of the Great Lakes and the Detroit regional watersheds enabled her to propose site-specific design solutions for low-income Detroit neighborhoods whose frequent flooding could be remediated by the use of natural landscapes for storm water control and water purification. Her many projects, both alone and in collaboration, have won major international competitions, and she has become an exemplar of interdisciplinary work that connects the college to sustainability initiatives throughout the university and in the wider community. Maria has proven herself to be a serious scholar committed to intellectually rigorous investigations, an award winning designer, a dedicated teacher, and a steward to the profession and community.

Maria joined the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning in 2009. Prior to that, she taught as a Design Studio Instructor at Boston Architectural College from 2007 to 2009. Maria holds a professional degree in architecture, with a specialization in building technology and urbanism, from the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 2001, and a Pedagogic Aptitude Diploma in Arts and Science from Madrid’s Compultense University in 2003. In 2004, she received a Master in Advanced Studies in Landscape Architecture from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, and in 2008 she received a Master of Landscape Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. In 2011, she received her Diploma of Advanced Studies from the Departments of Urban Studies and Territorial Planning in the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Maria is a founding partner, with Jen Maigret, of MAde-Studio. Established in 2011, MAde-Studio is a research-based design practice focused on the development of environmentally and culturally sound urban design practices. She is a registered architect in Spain, a member of the American Planning Association, and a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
