Taubman College Housing Studio Led by Graebner Featured in “Detroit 139” Exhibition

Work from the Fall 2016 Master of Architecture studio will be featured in the “A City For All: Future Housing Models for the City of Detroit” exhibition opening and panel discussion on Monday, September 25, 2017 at the Detroit Design 139 space on Woodward Avenue in Detroit. The semester-long housing studio coordinated by Assistant Professor of Practice, Lars Graebner, was a collaboration with the City of Detroit, and aimed to demonstrate how “how housing can contribute to urban, social and economic development” in Detroit.

“A City For All” is a part of Detroit 139, a program featuring an exhibition and a series of lectures and community events. The exhibition will showcase 38 projects divided in seven groups, and in addition to the work from the Taubman College housing studio, it includes designs by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and Assemble Design. Detroit 139 created “10 Design Principles” that provide an example of what kind designs could create “healthy, attractive city.” For example, principle number 8 states: “Impress the value of design on all projects and all audiences—emphasizing equity, design excellence, and inclusion.”

The narrative of Detroit’s resurgence often contrasts the newly booming Midtown and Downtown to its more neglected neighborhoods. Work from the Taubman College housing studio features eight projects, and the wide breadth of neighborhoods where these design proposals are located aims to combat that. They include:

  • Eastern Market / Dequindre Cut, led by Lars Gräbner, Christina Hansen, Craig Borum, Claudia Wigger
  • Livernois / McNichols, led by Doug Kelbaugh and Kit McCullough
  • Clark Park / Mexicantown, led by Kevin Adkins, Mick Kennedy, and Jonathan Rule
  • M5 / Grandland led by Joel Schmidt, and James Witherspoon
  • M5 / Redford Theater, led by U. Sean Vance, and Kim Dowdell
