Taubman College Harley Etienne, an associate professor of urban and regional planning, has been named a senior fellow with the Michigan Society of Fellows. Senior Fellows include many of the University’s leading scholars.
The Michigan Society of Fellows, under the auspices of the Rackham Graduate School, was established in 1970 with endowment grants from the Ford Foundation and the Horace H. and Mary Rackham Funds. Each year the Society selects outstanding applicants for appointment to three-year fellowships in the social, physical, and life sciences, the humanities, and in the professional schools. Etienne’s term is 2021–2024.
Etienne teaches in the areas of urban community development, inner-city revitalization, neighborhood change, urban poverty, and qualitative research issues in planning. His research focuses primarily on the intersection of social institutions and their relationship to processes of urban neighborhood change. He is keenly interested in the role that colleges and universities play in contributing to neighborhood-level change and regional economic development. After the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, he worked on several projects examining the role of land tenure policy and land rights in the post-earthquake recovery of Port-au-Prince.
