Budianastas Prastyatama

Budianastas Prastyatama had his architecture undergraduate and master’s education in Indonesia. He has worked as a professional architect from 1999 to 2013 before working full time as a junior lecturer. He studied a community’s self-help housing effort in his final undergraduate year, through which he came to know the self-empowerment issue in architecture. He continued his interest in empowerment issues during his master’s education in architecture design of urban places and their activity programming. The post 2004 tsunami rehabilitation effort in North Sumatra was where he experienced taking part in the post-disaster shelter efforts. Reducing the gap between the shelter or housing technology and the culture of the displaced communities has since become his ongoing quest. He is also the co-founder of Architecture Sans-Frontieres, Indonesian Chapter.

His research interest currently is at the intersection of architectural design, post-disaster housing effort, appropriate technology, and participatory approach. He is interested in unpacking the interface of architecture and the building technology to empower itself and the community that it is serving to contribute to improving resilience through the built-environment.
