Big Roof

Grounding a project in its environment orients even small-scale projects toward public benefit.

Depending on the season, Big Roof is either a cozy, indoor dining area or an oversized, outdoor garden pergola for Coriander, a farm-to-table restaurant in Jefferson Chalmers in Detroit. Custom designed wood trusses create a lively support canopy overhead that hosts plug-in elements, such as heaters and lighting. In turn, the canopy rests on a rectangular steel frame that touches the ground as lightly as possible. Activity spills from indoors to outdoors and vice versa, reaching out to embrace the life of the neighborhood.
