Taubman College Professor Kelbaugh wins AIA Huron Valley Honor Award for Dubai Mosque
Professor of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning, Douglas Kelbaugh, won a 2011 AIA Huron Valley Honor Award in the category of Unbuilt Work for his Dubai Mosque. Its “minimalist design is distilled to capture the essence of purity and simplicity, befitting a tranquil house of worship and sensitive to the surrounding context of modernist architecture.” “It will be the country’s first LEED certified mosque and one of the most sustainable, as well as one of the most contemporary mosques in the world.” Kelbaugh designed the mosque for Limitless, LCC, Dubai with NORR as architect of record. The AIA Toronto Jury commented “the Dubai Mosque impressed us as a dynamic, figural worship space. The clarity of the plan and layers of building scrims imply what can only be imagined as wonderfully dynamic spaces, dappled in sunlight by day and acting as beacons in the night.”
