Newell Appointed Director of the Master of Science in Material Systems and Digital Technologies

Assistant Professor of Architecture Catie Newell has been appointed Director of the Master of Science in Material Systems and Digital Technologies. Newell joined Taubman College faculty as the 2009 Oberdick Fellow and has been teaching undergraduate and graduate architecture classes, and in the Master of Science in Material Systems concentration. Newell is the principal of Detroit-based Alibi Studio and “her work and research captures spaces and material effects, focusing on the development of atmospheres through the exploration of textures, volumes, and the effects of light or lack thereof.” Before becoming a faculty member at Taubman College, Newell was a project designer at Office dA in Boston. She is a licensed architect and winner of numerous awards including the 2013-2014 Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon Polsky Rome Prize in Architecture, the 2011 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects and Designers, and in 2006 the SOM Prize for Architecture, Design and Urban Design.

Newell has exhibited at the 2012 Architecture Biennial, the 2015 Lille3000 Triennial, and her exhibit Overnight is currently on view a the University of Michigan Art Museum.
