Over one-third of global carbon dioxide emissions are associated with the construction and operation of buildings, and decisions about building materials, design, and site planning have profound impact on a wide range of sustainability outcomes. This class will span architecture, real estate, and construction to highlight the many ways sustainability is being advanced through real estate. Topics covered in the class will include adaptive reuse and eco-friendly materials, green building standards, energy efficiency, sustainable site planning, and community perspectives. In addition, the course covers related practical aspects of real estate development including site evaluation, schematic design, reading construction documents and blueprints, and project planning methods. Students will consider financial decision-making about sustainable construction in light of shifting public subsidies, regulations, and cost-benefit analysis. The class will culminate with a hands-on group project focused on real-world sustainability real estate construction challenges. A basic understanding of Excel is required for this class.
