Booth Fellowship Lecture + Exhibition Opening: James Wilson (M.Arch. ’11), “Hygge: Dwelling Poetically”

James Wilson (M.Arch. ’11), will present on his research funded by the Booth Fellowship, and his work will be featured in the Taubman College Gallery. Wilson’s research investigates hygge – a Danish concept involving elements of comfort, security, empathy, and trust – within the context of an architectural practice promoting wellness, community and stewardship. He attempts to answer, “What elements of hygge as a cultural practice and value system foster well-being and environmental awareness and responsibility?” The exhibition aims to capture the social, spatial and atmospheric phenomenology of hygge, suggesting how architecture might contribute to the development of a more sustainable culture of human wellness and ecological health.

The exploration of hygge and its related themes serves as an impetus and lens through which to critically reengage the broader concepts of home and dwelling. The exhibition seeks to instigate a renewed investigation of architecture’s role in the evolution of the meaning of home, speculating on how the concept of home might provide an alternative and more meaningful perspective with which to approach sustainable design.

An Invitation to Participate in this Exhibition

As an essential element of hygge has to do with the active appropriation and personalization of space, Wilson invites the students, faculty and staff to contribute to the exhibition. All are encouraged to contribute written and visual content to the exhibit throughout its run.

What does HOME feel like? What does HOME mean? What does it mean to DWELL in a space? What does it mean to BELONG to a place?
