Computational Textile Fabrication and Community-Based Design

May 2, 2022 at 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

PhD Colloquium Speaker Series with Felecia Davis

Textile production has often been associated with obedience and patience, and the soft nature of the materials often causes textile works to be deemed feminine. Thus, textile production has been a vehicle used by society to define the woman’s role. At the same time, because textile production is often tangled with gender representation and labor exploration in our society, it often serves as an alternative expression of agency. Further, projects like the Freedom Quilting Bee and AIDS quilt allow marginalized communities to expand their power and document history from alternative perspectives. We invite professor Felecia Davis to this panel to share her work and how she brings people together through textiles.
