Lecture: Gregg Pasquarelli, SHoP Architects/SHoP Construction

March 25, 2011 at 5:30 pm

Gregg Pasquarelli received a Bachelor of Science from the School of Business at Villanova University (1987), and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University (1994) where he graduated with Honors for Excellence in Design. He co-founded SHoP Architects in 1996 and has lectured, exhibited, and been published internationally. This think tank has pushed the designer’s realm past form making and into software design, real estate development, construction, and the co-development of new sustainable technologies. As both practitioners and educators, their commitment to challenging the entire process of building has made a convincing argument to a generation of architects that beauty and technological proficiency are not mutually exclusive. Their current work includes the Barclays Center at Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn, a two-mile esplanade and park along the East River Waterfront; the Innovation Hub Government Complex in Botswana, Africa; the South Street Seaport Redevelopment in New York; and projects for Google in Mountain View, CA.

SHoP received the 2009 National Design Award in Architecture Design from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, the Emerging Voices Award (2001) from the Architectural League of New York, the Academy Award in Architecture from the National Academy of Arts and Letters (2000), as well as multiple Progressive Architecture and AIA Awards and Citations. The November 2002 issue of the journal “AD: Architecture and Design” titled “Versioning: Evolutionary Techniques in Architecture” was guest edited by SHoP and their forthcoming book titled, “Out of Practice,” will be published by Monacelli Press in 2011. Pasquarelli was named the Davenport Professor of Architecture at Yale University (2009), the Saarinen Professor of Architecture at Yale (2006), the Louis Kahn Professor of Architecture at Yale (2004). He previously served as the University of Virginia Shure Professor of Architecture (2003) and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University (1996-2003). Pasquarelli serves on the Board of Directors for The Architectural League of New York and is a Young Leader’s Fellow of the National Committee on United States – China Relations. He is a Registered Architect in the State of New York.
