LunchUP: Austin McCoy, “Detroit Under STRESS: The Campaign to Stop Police Killings in the Early ’70s”

For his presentation, McCoy will discuss the campaign to stop police killings by the Detroit Police Department’s STRESS Unit during the early 1970s. This coalition featured a biracial group of radicals who challenged STRESS in the courts, streets, and in political discourse. Focusing on the campaign’s left-wing, he will also discuss how their framing of STRESS stemmed from the criminality of the police and the city’s economic elite.

These sessions are a response to requests from faculty and students to learn more about what’s going on in the field in an informal environment. We hope this can inspire emergent thoughts and connections that will inform our scholarship.
