Strengthening and Transforming the Lower Eastside: Supporting LEAP Phase III.

The Lower Eastside Action Plan (LEAP) is a community-driven, award-winning plan to transform vacant land and stabilize neighborhoods in the 15-square-mile area of Detroit’s Lower Eastside. Since the plan‘s completion in 2012, neighborhood needs and conditions have changed, and many of the plan‘s proposed projects and policies have been implemented. Therefore, the Eastside Community Network is leading an update of the plan.
Students have worked with Eastside Community Network and others to support this update. They have planned ways to strengthen the Chandler Park neighborhood, an area overlooked by City of Detroit investment recommendations and designated to become green ecological uses by Detroit Future City despite its strong housing. The students are also proposing ways to create an open space system to transform vacant land into an asset. Half the properties in the LowerEastside are vacant lots. Numerous ideas about developing open space plans in the city have tended toward ad hoc patchworks of proposed uses without underlying ideas about natural systems that could guide decisions for the future as additional land becomes available or as uses change. The students have aimed to move this effort forward with more emphasis on natural systems and with proposals for zoning that could preserve investments in open space (zoning proposals may not be quite ready at the rehearsal, though).
The students will make their final presentation to the LEAP Phase III advisory committee. Please come to give the students feedback to strengthen their presentation!
