Travel Course Info Session: Spain 
Siyasa-Lab: Re-imagining Spanish Heritage

“Siyasa-Lab” invites students to follow a pilgrimage over the intimacy of interventions in Spanish heritage where the return to the physical, tactile and humility of primary materials transforms historical works within contemporary context. In contrast with the mediatic projects, we will visit local sites such as the Matadero in Madrid, the Garcimunoz Castle in Cuenca, the Roman Museum in Merida, the Atarazanas Reales in Sevilla, Between Cathedrals in Cadiz, the Medina Azahara Museum and the Mosque in Cordoba, the Alhambra and the Nazari Wall in Granada, the Torre del Homenaje in Almeria, the Molinete in Cartagena and Medina Siyasa in Cieza. In Medina Siyasa, the students will be asked to imagine future possibilities for one of the most important hispano-muslim archeological sites in southeast Europe. 

The course will also provide collaborations with students of architecture from the Universidad Catolica de San Antonio (UCAM), and experts from cultural and educational institutions such as the UCAM, Museo Siyasa, and the Servicio de Patrimonio Historico of Murcia. The travel course will conclude with a public exhibition that offers a collection of graphic examples of spatial strategies analyzed by the students during the course along with the proposals for the re-imagination of Medina Siyasa. The exposition and workshop will develop cross-cultural conversations between students from the University of Michigan, students from the UCAM, experts from the different institutions and citizen engagement. “Siyasa-Lab” represents a great opportunity to value the past and study cases of contemporary architecture, where the least superficial works are often the most silent.
