Neighborhood Institute is an Ann Arbor-based nonprofit with the vision that everyone can have a home and meet their daily needs affordably and sustainably in their chosen neighborhood.

The Institute’s mission is to educate the public by providing information and a forum for discussion around the following topics:

  1. How the housing and transportation landscape in the US has been shaped by policy and regulation, such as zoning and subsidies.
  2. How these policies led to higher rent burdens and transportation costs, economic segregation, and the degradation of accessibility, environmental quality, and human health.
  3. What solutions experts advise and what best practices facilitate more affordable and sustainable housing and transportation choices.
  4. How individuals can organize and advocate for effective policies and processes at the local, tribal, state, and federal levels.
