New York sidewalks are often shrouded by wood and steel “sidewalk sheds.” Kevin Erickson (M.Arch ’07) and his colleagues at KNEStudio have been selected as one of three finalists in urbanSHED, a competition to redesign these eyesore structures. Their design, urbanCLOUD, is a tiered, white overhang designed to protect the masses from roadside construction sites.
Erickson will advance with the other finalists to the second stage of the competition. Finalists are awarded $5,000 to work on further sidewalk shed design, and the winner will receive $10,000 and see their design built in lower Manhattan.
Erickson, in addition to running KNEStudio, is now an assistant professor at the University of Illinois.
