“Complete Streets” Pioneer to be honored at UM Taubman College Homecoming

Peter Lagerwey, M.U.P.’81, will deliver the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Lecture at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning on Friday, October 12th.

In communities across the country, a movement is growing to “complete” the streets. States, cities, and towns are asking their planners and engineers to build roads that enable safe access for all users, regardless of age, ability, or mode of travel. In the process, they are creating better communities for people to live, play, work, and shop.

Peter Lagerwey, who earned his master of urban planning degree from UM’s Taubman College in 1981, is a nationally-known expert in alternative transportation issues. For the last three decades – many years before these issues were on the table – he has worked on non-motorized transportation projects. He was responsible for developing and implementing the widely acclaimed Seattle Bicycle Master Plan, giving the city its reputation as “the most bike-friendly city of its size” as well as one of America’s most livable cities.

In addition, Lagerwey has served on nearly every national committee writing guidelines for planning and designing pedestrian and bicycle facilities. A creative and collaborative planner, his efforts have changed the way people do transportation planning in cities all over the world.

Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning at the University of Michigan will recognize Lagerwey’s accomplishment with its 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award. As routine accommodation issues have become a part of transportation discussions at all levels – local, state, and national, Lagerwey’s recognition is especially timely and appropriate. On October 12, 2012, he will present some of his non-motorized projects and initiatives in Seattle and beyond.

After the lecture, all will be welcome to lunch with Lagerwey and Taubman College faculty, students, and alumni in the Art & Architecture Courtyard (In the event of rain, the lunch will move indoors to the Street Gallery on the first floor of the building.).
