Alumnus John Ronan receives AIA Institute National Honor Award for the Poetry Foundation

John Ronan AIA (B.S. Arch '85), principal at John Ronan Architects, received the AIA Institute National Honor Award for the Poetry Foundation in Chicago. The Poetry Foundation is a building in dialogue with a garden created through erosion of an implied volume as described by the L-shaped property boundary. The garden interlocks with the building and is conceived as another "room," part of the building's slowly-unfolding spatial sequence revealed space by space, not unlike a poem is revealed line by line.

Ronan is also featured in the article, "Who's Chicago's Next Star Architect? John Ronan Already Shining Brightly," published in January 2012 in the Chicago Tribune. The article explores his work on the Poetry Foundation as well as on the South Shore International College Prep High School in Chicago. Despite tight budgets and detailed restrictions from school authorities, South Shore International College Prep High School mines the early Modernist vocabulary of taut planes and clean lines which exploit space, light, and transparency.
