June Manning Thomas earns U-M’s Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award

June Manning Thomas, Centennial Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, has been selected as a recipient of the 2014 Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award. Established in 1996 in honor of the former Dean of the School of Social Work, Harold R. Johnson, the award recognizes University of Michigan faculty members on the Ann Arbor campus who have exhibited outstanding leadership in the area of cultural diversity and are committed to the development of a more culturally and ethnically diverse campus community.

According to the Office of the Provost, Manning Thomas was honored for her, “extensive and extraordinary contributions to the multicultural mission of the University.”

Lester Monts, senior vice provost for academic affairs added, “Now in its 18th year, the Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award continues to draw outstanding individuals to its ranks. Through their research, teaching and support of students, these outstanding individuals help advance the university’s commitment to diversity as an essential part of our educational mission.”

As a result of this award, Manning Thomas will receive a $5,000 stipend to further her work on diversity. A recognition ceremony and dinner will be held Wednesday, May 7, in the Founders Room at the U-M Alumni Center. Visit the Office of the Provost for more information on the Harold R.
