Director of the Master of Science in Digital and Material Technologies and Associate Professor of Architecture Catie Newell will conduct a design and research project as part of the Autodesk Pier 9 Residency Program. Newell’s proposal investigates the allowance of darkness in architecture through testing building skins and wall sections. She describes the material and perceptual ambitions of the Impossible Darkness project, “to develop a form of practice that is driven by a family of optical effects paired with an understanding of material, formal, and textural behaviors and manipulations.”

The project will scale up from “small vessels of darkness” to machine processes and material use for interior and exterior surfacing. Some of Newell’s previous work has involved research on reflections of light and perceptions of darkness, especially Unlit (2012), Overnight (2016), and Specimen (2012, with Wes McGee). Her work can be found on her website, Alibi Studio.

Newell’s residency will take place in February to May, 2018 at Autodesk’s Pier 9 location in San Francisco.
