This course teaches students to observe, document, and interrogate place by paying close attention to the physical environment and its material reality. By learning to make annotated and collaged images, maps, and axonometric drawings, students practice basic spatial and experiential analysis. These visual mediums provide a useful lens for understanding the dynamics that play out between human, built, and natural systems in cities. The course culminates in a game called The Incomplete City, which challenges students to imagine and visualize a city of 10,000 people using human-scale elements of urban design.
