Architecture Student Research Grant

Applications for the Architecture Student Research Grant are now open and will close March 16, 2025.

The Architecture Student Research Grant (ASRG) was initiated by the Class of 2013 to provide a unique opportunity for student research projects that push the boundaries and possibilities of the discipline of architecture. Successful proposals for ASRG funding will seek to discover new forms and methods of working, making, and representing architecture within a societal context of urgent concerns. Special consideration will be given to teams whose members articulate how the proposed project will aid in charting a course for their early career or future academic pursuits.

The ASRG program will award three winning projects of up to $3,000 each.

ASRG is funded through the Taubman College Architecture Program, with generous support from the George B. Brigham Student Research Fund, given by former professor of architecture George B. Brigham, who taught at University of Michigan.

Eligibility

Taubman College students who are enrolled and continuing in the 2025-2026 Academic Year are eligible to apply. Students can include team members from other disciplines, as well as from different stages of education. Solo proposals will be accepted. At least one team member must be degree seeker from any of the following Taubman College Architecture Programs :

  • Bachelor of Science
  • Master of Architecture
  • Master of Urban Design
  • Master of Science
  • PhD

Assessment

Application materials will be evaluated anonymously by a blind jury of architecture faculty. Projects can take various forms: built objects, installations, experiments, representations, written work, or models for alternative practice. The research will be presented as both an exhibition and a public lecture. The budget must be realistic; projects that convey a strong awareness of their costs (research & exhibition). Projects that are clear in their plan to optimize their funds will be favored.

Requirements

All submission components (see bulleted list below) should be uploaded as a single PDF file via Dropbox by the deadline. Applicants must ensure that no part of the submission can be used to identify them by name.

The naming convention for the uploaded file should be: “YourProposalTitle_ASRG_2025.pdf”.

Submissions must include the following:

  • A 1-page project proposal containing a 400-word description that may consist of images
  • A 1-page proposed project schedule
  • A 1-page budget with a line item for each expense proposed
  • Samples of previous work for each team member (not to exceed 1 page per person)

The final step is to complete this Google Form, where you list the Proposal title and names and uniqnames of the students on the team.
