This course is an introduction to architecture history by way of an in-depth examination of key developments from its ancient origins to the present day, understood in relation to formal and theoretical concerns. The purpose of the class is to situate architectural production within the framework of historic issues that underwrite current work. In this light architecture is presented as a triangulation of timely and (seemingly) archaic topics to position contemporary work within the trajectory of continuances, inversions and rejections that constitute architecture’s on-going disciplinary concerns. The purpose of this course is to situate architectural production within the framework of historic issues that underwrite current work. This course is required for first-year students in the three-year Master of Architecture degree, but is open to other students as well.
