The course discusses urban concepts and policies in Eastern Europe during the XIX-XX centuries. The course aims to explore the background of urban development of cities in Eastern Europe through territory and historical timeline approach. The territory approach will cover such countries as Ukraine, former USSR territory, Eastern Germany, Poland, Czech Republic. The historical timeline will frame the study of influences of the main historical periods on urban development and architecture of cities in these countries. The course highlights the urban concepts and policies during the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867–1918), Russian Empire during the XIX till 1917, the Communist Era during the USSR, and countries of the Socialist Bloc in Eastern Europe. The course will analyze the context of urban planning concepts and policies in the case study cities in Ukraine, former USSR, Eastern Germany, and others. We will emphasize on the content of administrative planning system approach, residential concepts (commune, from prefabrication to micro districts), system of public buildings and territories in the region. The study of urban concepts and policies in Eastern Europe during the XIX-XX centuries in this course will convey an understanding of the current post-socialist developments and socio-urban problems such as regeneration, participation and conservation in the region.
