Master of Science in Material Systems course travels to Germany

Focusing on the advancement of knowledge in the field of Material Computation for Architecture, students and professors from Taubman College traveled to Stuttgart, Germany for workshops, installations, and research in the Material Computation at the University of Stuttgart Institute for Computational Design (ICD), and the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE).

The travel program was collaborative workshop with the University of Stuttgart Faculty of Architecture and a continuation of the Masters of Science in Material Systems course lead by Assistant Professor focusing on Material Computation for Differentiated Textile/Composite Systems and joined by Assistant Professor Catie Newell and students from the Master of Science in Digital Technology and M.Arch Program.

In particular, the workshop involved interaction with the Institute for Computational Design (ICD) at the University of Stuttgart run by Prof. Achim Menges and the Institute for Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) run by Dr. Prof. Jan Knippers. The workshop was composed of a series of lectures and discussions between the students, researchers, and PhD Candidates. During the workshop a larger installation was constructed as a part of an exhibition titled Textile Morphologies, on the topic of Material Computation for Differentiated Textile Structures. The workshop also included a focus in advanced manufacturing of textiles through active collaboration with STOLL, a worldwide manufacturer of CNC knitting machines based in Germany.

The research trip was generously supported by the International Institute Experiential Learning Fund and Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
