Roy Strickland Heads First International Workshop on Beijing Urban Design at the Beijing Advanced Urbanism Center

In August, Roy Strickland, Professor of Architecture, together with Niall Kirkwood, Harvard University Professor of Landscape Architecture and Technology, conducted the first of a planned series of international urban design workshops at the Beijing Advanced Urbanism Center, China’s new one hundred million dollar design initiative focused on the country’s mega-city regions. Working for two weeks with students from the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Strickland and Kirkwood produced concepts for the new Beijing municipal center to be located in the city’s historic Tongzhou district. The concepts feature new developments, transportation networks and environmental and cultural conservation projects for the area as it prepares to receive one million new residents. The results were presented to Tongzhou government officials toward discussion with Xi Jinping, President of China.
