Mankouche’s “Afterhouse” Project Featured in The Atlantic

Associate Professor of Architecture Steven Mankouche’s ongoing Detroit project, “Afterhouse” is featured in the November issue of The Atlantic. The article,  “Turning Detroit’s Abandoned Homes into Greenhouses,” by Jennifer Leigh Hester, discusses the transformation of an abandoned house into a year-round greenhouse by Mankouche, his partner Abigail Murray, and their design collective, archolab. The project, located in a well-populated neighborhood, maintains the bungalow design of the original structure and is augmented by a fortified foundation and passive solar design elements to maintain a constant, warm temperature for plant life. The team hopes that this project may become a prototype for thinking creatively about non-residential uses for neglected houses.
