PhD Candidate and Mellon Fellow Honored with Graham Foundation's Carter Manny Award

Emine Seda Kayim, a PhD candidate in architecture, and Manuel Shvartzberg Carrió, a 2018-2019 Michigan Mellon Fellow, recently were honored by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

Two Carter Manny Awards are given each year, one for writing and one for research. This year, Kayim received the research award for her dissertation, “Stasi as Architectural Producer: Surveillance and Scientific Management in the East German Built Environment, 1961–1989.” This work explores the German Democratic Republic’s (GDR) Ministry of State Security — known as the Stasi — as an architectural producer to examine its largely unexplored involvement in the East German built environment, interrogating the multifaceted and co-constitutive operations of state surveillance and building industry between production and use.

Carrió was awarded a citation of special recognition for the writing of his dissertation, “Designing ‘Post-Industrial Society’: Settler Colonialism and Modern Architecture in Palm Springs, California, 1876–1973.”
