This week, a group of Taubman College students and faculty will attend the 2018 Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) conference in Mexico City. The conference, taking place October 18-20, is themed Re/calibration and will focus on issues and innovation in computational design research.
The attending Taubman students include 13 who are concentrating their studies on digital and material technologies as part of the master of science in architecture program, as well as 12 of Assistant Professor Tsz Yan Ng‘s thesis students. Students routinely attend ACADIA to establish their participation in the architecture community and broaden their exposure to cutting-edge work in the field.
The college also is well-represented in terms of the conference’s speaking leadership. Associate Professor Kathy Velikov, who serves as ACADIA’s president, will deliver remarks. In addition, faculty will lead the following sessions during the conference:
- Cyclopean Cannibalism. A method for recycling rubble
Assistant Professor Wes McGee (with Brandon Clifford, MIT)
- Robotic Needle Felting
Assistant Professor Wes McGee, Assistant Professor Tsz Yan Ng,
and Lecturer Asa Peller
- SLUMPED GLASS: Auxetics and acoustics
Assistant Professor Wes McGee and Associate Professor Catie Newell
(with Detroit-based collaborator Zackery Belanger)
- Topologically Optimized and Functionally Graded Cable Nets. New approaches through robotic additive manufacturing
Assistant Professor Wes McGee and Daniel Tish, M.Arch ’15
(with Tim Schork, University of Technology Sydney)
- Design of Robotically Fabricated Timber Frame Structures
Arash Adel, 2019 Post-Doctoral Fellow (with Andreas Thoma, Matthias Helmreich,
Fabio Gramazio, and Matthias Kohler, all of ETH Zürich)
In addition, work by Jonathan Rule, assistant professor of practice; Ana Morcillo Pallarés, assistant professor; McLain Clutter, associate professor; and Cyrus Penarroyo, assistant professor; will appear in the conference’s accompanying project book.
