Assistant Professor of Architecture Adam Fure has published Possible Mediums (Actar, 2018), which he co-edited with Kelly Bair (University of Illinois at Chicago), Kristy Balliet (SCI-Arc), and Kyle Miller (Syracuse University). Associate Professor John McMorrough contributed to the work.
Possible Mediums is a collection of 16 speculative design mediums by emerging architects. Each chapter defines an active medium in contemporary architecture through descriptions, drawings, and objects. Possible Mediums arranges projects according to shared technical and aesthetic traits, creating a vibrant taxonomy of design. Descriptive texts explain the working principles behind each medium and introduce design concepts intended to inspire students and professionals alike.
The book is the result of the trio’s eponymous collaborative that began at a conference in 2013. The workshops, symposia, and exhibitions that grew out of this conference all investigate and challenge architectural mediums. The book continues the project’s focus on new design concepts through drawings, text, and objects.
