The Morenci copper mine is scheduled to close in 2040. In accordance with The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, funding has been set aside to fund the site’s “Reclamation” – a process by which the site is returned to its original contour and condition. This proposal creates a national monument to preserve the vast and sublime excavated landscape. Remediation activities are staged over long timeframes to process toxic substances concentrated in the waters of the site. A series of architectures enable visitation and contemplation of this profound landscape as it transforms over time, teaming with new ecologies.
