Using Video to Shape Cityscapes: A Public Education Initiative

Gabe Monett

This project aims to leverage the power of widely accessible video platforms like TikTok and YouTube to educate and mobilize the public in advocating for urban planning strategies that prioritize public safety, health, and community well-being. Partnering with the Neighborhood Institute, a non-profit organization led by Kirk Westphal dedicated to urban planning advocacy and with support by Prof. Levine, the project seeks to address the entrenched resistance to equitable and sustainable urban planning practices posed by neighborhood defenders.

The project involves creating a series of informative and engaging videos covering a range of urban planning topics, from practical tips for engaging with local planning authorities to unpacking the motivations of neighborhood defenders. By utilizing existing urban planning data, literature reviews, and public engagement resources, the project aims to provide viewers with well-researched content that empowers them to actively participate in local planning discussions.

Ultimately, this project seeks to not only raise awareness of urban planning issues but also to mobilize individuals and communities to advocate for inclusive and equitable urban development policies. By amplifying diverse voices and providing actionable steps for civic engagement, the project aims to contribute to the creation of healthier, safer, and more vibrant urban environments for all.
