Studio Reassembled
Studio Reassembled is a 1500-sf design studio environment on the third floor of Taubman College. Hosting nine studios at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Architecture and Urban Design, this experimental model pivots from the traditional one-to-one student-to-desk setup, offering amenities and resources in alignment with new pedagogical trends.
Built collaboratively by faculty, students, alumni, and makers, Studio Reassembled is an open, immersive studio space where spatial, technological, and natural worlds overlap. It’s meant to cultivate an environment where learning thrives through dynamic peer exchange, experimental projects, and flexible instructional pathways, and encourages students to move beyond passive learning, transforming the studio into a space for shared exploration and action-oriented design.
The space operates with an embedded consultancy model, providing on-floor access to expertise in Environmental Science & Climate Engineering, Visualization Technology, Public Interest Design, and Library Science, ensuring students have real-time support for diverse project needs. Additionally, student representatives act as liaisons, connecting peers with available resources and enhancing the overall learning experience by bridging student needs with program offerings.
Resources
Communal Print & Material Library
Serving as the gateway to the University of Michigan’s vast library system, which holds over 11 million volumes and an extensive architecture archive, our college librarian, Rebecca Price, curates resources specifically for Studio Reassembled. By reviewing faculty syllabi, Price selects key texts for a shared studio bibliography, ensuring that students have direct access to a thoughtfully assembled foundation of design research. Additionally, she is available on site for several hours each week to meet with students and faculty to support their research.
TVLab Annex
The Taubman Visualization Lab (TVLab) is a flexible, collaborative space equipped with a broad range of Extended Reality (XR) technologies, including augmented and virtual reality, 3D scanning and spatial mapping equipment, computational devices, and more.
Studio Reassembled participants have access to the following TVLab equipment:
- XR-Ready PCs
- VR Headsets
- 3D Printing w/ Free White PLA+ Filament
- iPad Pros w/ Apple Pencil Pros
- Plug-and-Play Computer Monitors
- Photography Studio
- Green Screen Room
- Photo Backdrops
- Lighting Equipment
- DSLR Camera
Climate Futures
Climate Futures amplifies architectural, design, and planning contributions to mutual flourishing in the built environment by providing climate focused learning, resources, and visibility in direct proximity to Studio Reassembled.
Located immediately adjacent to the Studio Reassembled floor, Climate Futures offers students and faculty an optional layer of support that connects studio work to climate related coursework, workshops, consultants, and research resources. Students working in Studio Reassembled can draw on Climate Futures to deepen the environmental, social, and technical dimensions of their projects without interrupting the flow of studio practice.
By sitting alongside this shared, interdisciplinary studio environment, Climate Futures helps surface and connect climate focused ideas emerging across studios, making it easier for students to engage questions of resilience, equity, and environmental performance as part of their everyday design work. Together, Climate Futures and Studio Reassembled create a porous learning ecosystem where climate literacy and design experimentation reinforce one another.
U-M Public Design Corps
Located adjacent to the Studio Reassembled space, Public Design Corps brings students, faculty, and partners into design processes rooted in equity and reciprocity. The work expands design’s civic and cultural impact, applies spatial intelligence to public questions, and exercises engagement as a form of critical inquiry through research, policy, and reflective practice. Students can draw upon tools, workshops, mentors, and peers across disciplines to move ideas into modes of public communication and action.
Community Management
As primary stewards of Studio Reassembled, student representatives guide peers in making the most of the space. They handle everything from day-to-day organization to special events, and are the first point of contact for faculty and students, should issues arise.
