“The proximity to Detroit – a dramatically changing and evolving urban center – is a great learning opportunity to engage design and planning in real-world challenges and solutions.”

Describe the work you do. What are some of your recent and current projects that excite you? What inspires you about the future of your chosen field?
For the last 30 years, my focus has been in Higher Education facility and campus planning and design. Many things inspire me about higher ed: the students, beautiful campus spaces and architectural context, the need for constant evolution and appreciative clients who respect what design professionals do. Today, my focus is on strategy – aligning planning and design with unique client needs that, in some cases, may not be defined or understood.

Why did you choose Taubman College for your education?
The University of Michigan was my top choice for college. Fortunately, Taubman is a strong program, so it was an easy decision.

How did Taubman College prepare you for your career? What experiences beyond the classroom (internships, research assistantships, teaching opportunities, or other external experiences) provided additional value?
Taubman was great. My primary focus was on my courses while in the program. Thanks to recruiting opportunities set up by the school, I was able to land my first job with a local Ann Arbor firm (run by two alumni). Those alumni were excellent mentors and gave me great skills early on that impacted my entire career.

How has being part of the alumni community impacted you, personally and professionally?
My engagement has been limited to date … I hope to increase this in the future!

What did you like best about attending Taubman College?
Great and impactful faculty: James Chaffers, Rob Cole had a big impact on my work.

What advice or important lesson would you share with someone considering Taubman College?
Take full advantage of the opportunities the College offers! The proximity to Detroit – a dramatically changing and evolving urban center – is a great learning opportunity to engage design and planning in real-world challenges and solutions.

Other thoughts, advice, or knowledge you would like to share?
Have an open mind about where an architectural education can take you! It takes time to truly understand and appreciate the profession … so be patient … and continue to explore and allow yourself to learn and grow.
