“Build your network today – your student peers could be your partners and clients in the future.”

Describe the work you do. What are some of your recent and current projects that excite you? What inspires you about the future of your chosen field?
I lead the healthcare design practice for CannonDesign globally. I love the challenge of taking one of the most challenging building typologies that exists and making it transformational for providers and beautiful for patients. Currently I’m leading the largest project in Mayo Clinic history – a $5B reinvention of its flagship campus in Rochester Minnesota.

How did Taubman College prepare you for your career? What experiences beyond the classroom (internships, research assistantships, teaching opportunities, or other external experiences) provided additional value?
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it were not for Taubman College. The University gave me the opportunity to work for the Planning and Design department at the University Hospital, where I spent 4 years as a student intern learning the profession – but perhaps more important making connections…. Michigan connections. I met my mentor there, followed him to two firms, across two states as he taught me everything I know. I just had dinner with him in Salt Lake City 40 years after I first met him. We discussed the impact we have had on society, as well as our Michigan memories separated by a generation.

What advice or important lesson would you share with someone considering Taubman College?
Build your network today – your student peers could be your partners and clients in the future. Leverage your Michigan connections – they are strong. Say Go Blue when you see the block M other countries – it will make both of your days!
