Upali Nanda

Associate Professor of Practice in Architecture

Upali Nanda is director of research for HKS Inc., a global architectural firm, and associate professor of practice in architecture at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. She also serves as the executive director of the nonprofit Center for Advanced Design Research and Evaluation. Nanda’s doctoral work has been published as a book, Sensthetics (VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller, 2008), and she is widely published in peer-reviewed journals and quoted in the media. Her research has been awarded the European Healthcare Design Research Award and two Environmental Design Research Association CORE awards. In 2015, Nanda was recognized as one of the Top 10 Most Influential People in Healthcare Design by Healthcare Design Magazine. Most recently, she was honored with the 2018 Women in Architecture Innovator Award from Architectural Record.

She received her Bachelor of Architecture from India’s School of Architecture and Design, her Master of Architecture from the National University of Singapore, and a PhD from Texas A&M University.
