Course Brief:

This seminar explores transformations to the built environment amid advancements in mobility and access. By now the technologies are familiar enough, whether as prototypes or everyday practices:  on-demand transit, autonomous vehicles, congestion pricing, mobility hubs, apps for sharing everything. Yet the prospects for the built environment seem less well understood. What are the potentials for new urbanisms, new building types, and a reinvigorated public realm? How might access to the city be made more equitable? What core values must society preserve in the face of technological change? Through readings, field visits, and case studies, this seminar will unpack the memes of smart city and new mobility, and reexamine the role of architecture and urbanism.
