Architecture of Soviet Ukraine

The course discusses architecture in Ukraine during the 20th century with the focuse on the period of Soviet Ukraine. The course aims to explore the influences on architecture of Soviet Ukraine through cities, buildings, and citizens. The course highlights the foreign expertise, flow of technologies during the early Soviet industrialization in Eastern Ukraine from the USA and Europe. The context of the politics and economy in the USSR shaped concepts of Soviet planning, standardization, and the urban environment. The course will analyze the architecture of the 1930s in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhya, Dnipro that marked the development of constructivism in the region. The course covers architecture of Eastern and Western Ukraine, through constructivism, Ukrainian modern, Stalinist Architecture, post-modernism, post-Soviet architecture. We will emphasis the value of architectural monuments in Ukraine as the UNESCO heritage sites, for the culture and history of Ukraine. The study of architecture of Soviet Ukraine in this course will form the understanding of current situation of architecture in this region.
