Reframing Computation and Making through Embodiment and Culture
Humanism Recoded opens a conversation around design and research strategies that leverage digital technologies, robotics, computation, algorithms, material innovation, and advanced fabrication to humanize our visions for the future. This year’s conference is hosted by Lawrence Technological University’s College of Architecture and Design, located in the Detroit metropolitan region — a city shaped by innovation, production, and reinvention.
The conference will bring together researchers, designers, educators, and industry leaders to examine how computation can be a humanistic force capable of generating meaningful digital and physical experiences, grounded in local specificity and global responsibility. Through peer‑reviewed papers, workshops, exhibitions, and keynote events, ACADIA 2026 will highlight new methods, tools, and frameworks that respond to the challenges and opportunities of our rapidly changing world.
Taubman College is hosting a workshop in the Taubman College FABLab called Large Format Robotic Clay Printing for Bio-Integrated Architecture.
This workshop will explore large-format 3D printing of bioreceptive ceramic building components, focusing on integrating biomaterials, material knowledge, and fabrication. Participants will be introduced to the basics of clay composites, biotech for the built environment, material preparation, and robotic extrusion. Workshop attendees will mix and test clay bodies with various additives, then evaluate their printability and test their potential to support biological growth.
