Black History Month – Fireside Chat #2 February 19 AT 6:30 PM
Wed 19

A. Alfred Taubman Wing Commons

The Black History Month Committee invites you to a Fireside chat exploring the intersections of art, design, and equity. Join esteemed Black creatives as they share their journeys, discuss the transformative power of their work, and reflect on the role of storytelling in shaping more inclusive spaces. This intimate conversation promises to inspire, challenge, and spark meaningful dialogue about fostering change through creativity.

Theme: Black Centered Education

The theme of the second fireside chat, Black-Centered Education, emphasizes and centers the histories, cultures, contributions, and experiences of Black people. Black-Centered Education promotes a curriculum that reflects diverse Black perspectives, acknowledges the intersectionality of race, gender, and class, all while incorporating different points of views from intellectual traditions of African, African American, Caribbean, and Afro-Latinx peoples.

We also recognize the crucial need in today’s culture for more uncomfortable but necessary conversations that shed a light on what educating black people looks and feels like. Challenging dominant, Eurocentric narratives and reimagining education as a tool for empowerment, resistance, and transformation through art, community engagement and collaboration, we will challenge the status-quo as future thinkers and doers to dismantle systemic inequalities.

This session encourages listeners –both Black and non-Black – to explore the complexities of race, identity, power, and justice in ways that are grounded in the lived experiences and intellectual contributions of Black people.

Lutalo Sanifu, Director of Community Engagement, University of Michigan Center for Innovation
