Assistant professor Kathy Velikov and associate professor Geoffrey Thün’s firm, RTVR, explores Venice through the condition of aqua alta (high water) and the ecological transformation of the Venetian Lagoon attendant to the rising sea levels sponsored by global warming. Buoyant Aquacology envisions a form of nomadic urbanism that capitalizes upon the emergence of new forms of salt water algae based aquacology colonizing the lagoon and a system of immense barrier rings that defend its historic island settlements. The article was published in the October 2009 issue of Water.

Water is edited by John Knechtel and published by MIT Press. Within this 14th ABC anthology, writers, scientists, architects, and artists consider the many aspects of water, at levels from the microscopic to the global, touching on subjects that range from new water infrastructures to ancient bathing rituals.

Concurrent with the launch of Water, the work of RVTR is featured in HYDROCity, a group exhibition of work from a range of creative practices that engage hydrology and urbanism. HYDROCity opened in the Toronto Free Gallery on October 6 2009, and will tour to New York and Chicago in 2010. Other international participants include OMA, Bureau E.A.S.T., Waterstudio.NL, Lateral Office, Rijkswaterstaat, Ghazal Jafari, Andrea Abita, Shahrzad Nezafati, Atelier Van Lieshout, Hanneke Geurts vanKessel , Paisajes Emergentes, Fletcher Studio, Marta Jaku and Bas Princen.
